Some 40 years ago, when the BBC was taking a terrible beating from the commercial boys...we were told that if the day ever came when the BBC had a larger share of the audience than ITV, then we would have failed the public...and that our mandate to inform, educate and entertain would be in ruins.
But all too soon afterwards...the Beeb was pointed down the path of "the ratings mean everything" The fear was that the Government would close us down if we didn't clobber the opposition.
Now there are encouraging signs of a U-turn...
Dare I hope that we will see less and less of the moronic "celebrity" rubbish?
